​Weed Identification

The University of Tennessee Weed Diagnostics Center (WDC) offers two methods of weed identification: traditional whole plant analysis or molecular weed identification using internally transcribed spacer DNA. Both of these services are outlined below.

​Basic Weed Identification​

Weeds will be identified based on morphological and botanical characteristics. Fresh plant samples 
should be mailed to the following address:

In most cases, a report detailing the sample and control recommendations will be provided 7-10 days after receipt.

Cost

$29 per sample for Tennessee residents / $39 per sample for non-Tennessee residents

Submit a Sample for Basic Weed Identification

​​Molecular Weed Identification

Weeds that cannot be identified via traditional means will be recommended for molecular weed identificationIMG_3588.JPG
using internally transcribed spacer (ITS) DNA. Genomic DNA will be extracted from plant tissues and used as a template for amplification of the ITS region. Amplified products will be purified and sent for sequencing. Sequences will be entered in a Blast search in GenBank and identified by sequence identity (≥ 98%). The WDC will maintain an ITS sequence and DNA library of weeds for future reference and study.​

In most cases, a report detailing the sample and control recommendations will be provided 2-3 weeks after receipt.
